Herman Webster Mudgett, better known as H. H. Holmes, was an American serial killer who operated during the late 19th century. He is infamous for his “Murder Castle,” a hotel he built in Chicago for the 1893 World’s Fair, which was designed with numerous hidden passages, trapdoors, and soundproof rooms where he committed his crimes.
Holmes confessed to killing 27 people, although the actual number of his victims is still a subject of debate, with some estimates ranging much higher. He would lure guests into his hotel, where he would torture and murder them. Holmes often sold the bodies of his victims to medical schools or dissected them himself.
After his arrest in 1894, Holmes was tried and convicted of murder. He was hanged in 1896. Holmes’ case remains one of the most notorious and disturbing in American criminal history, and his story has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and adaptations in popular culture.
